Flights

Munich (MUC) is the closest airport to our wedding location. There are direct flights available from LAX to Munich via Lufthansa (duration 12 hours). However, many other alternatives exist as well.

IMPORTANT

There are new passport rules that require that your passport cannot expire 3 to 6 months after your return date from Germany. Yes this sounds very odd and makes no sense. But check your passport! Here are two good articles about this issue:

Current Flight Prices

Prices found on July 9-10, 2014 on direct carrier websites and on kayak.com. Flights are 18 hours or less, many much less. Longer fights may be a bit cheaper but somewhat painful. Flight prices are listed from LAX and SFO to MUC. I’m aware some people will come from Austin, Boston, etc…Please let me know if you need help searching from those airpots. We hope that you will stay even longer in Germany / Europe to take in the sites, but these are a few sample prices to help on your search.

From the Airport to Munich

After arriving at the Munich Airport, you may choose to rent a car or take public transportation. The public transportation system is very handy and pleasant. However, if you cannot live without a car, feel free to rent one. Keep in mind that we plan to setup ridesharing with locals or, more likely, arrange for a shuttle bus to get you from Munich to the wedding location. More info on the “Getting to Grafenau” page.

Driving from the Airport

Driving to the city takes about 20-40 minutes, depending on traffic and where your hotel in Munich is. From the airport, follow these instructions, ask at your rental car office or use google maps.

  1. Take the A92 from Zentralallee towards Munich
  2. Take the A9 into Munich
  3. Exit the A9 and take surface streets according to your destination address

Public Transport from the Airport

There are two train lines that go to Munich from the airport, S1 and S8. If you are staying near us in the Schwabing area of Munich, S1 is a slightly faster train. From the S1, you can transfer to the U2 to come to Schwabing, for example Hohenzollernplatz. If you are staying in the city center, either train is fine and goes direct to Marienplatz (main plaza of town, famous for the Glockenspiel!). The train takes about 50 minutes to get to the city.

S_BahnThe train station is located in between Terminal 2 (your arrival terminal) and Terminal 1. Follow the signs with an icon that looks like a train or look for the green circle with an S in it (stands for “S-bahn”, german word for train).

In order to get from the Airport to the city, you will need to purchase an “Airport City Day Ticket, Inner District”. The cost is 11.70 Euro. Partner tickets are also available and super reasonable. Very detailed and helpful information can be found here.

The train, subway, bus and tram system are all part of one network, thus you only need one ticket and it will work for any form of transportation. The ticket above will work on all forms of transport for the whole day of your arrival until 6 am the next day.
